[ Renji's gonna take that as a very enthusiastic invitation. Which he graciously accepts, taking his birthday presents along with him.
In his usual too eager fashion, Renji is at Keigo's door within a minute. Knocking, for once. The soft rap of his knuckles against the door frame don't betray the nervous excitement he feels at the moment.
When Keigo opens the door, he'll see Renji in a dark kimono, well-groomed, obviously already prepared to come over. In one hand is a small box and slung over his shoulder is a very long. Thing. ]
[ it didn't take much to get keigo excited, even in the middle of the night. when he saw renji looking all dressed up, though, keigo definitely looked a little taken aback.
he let renji in with a grin, looking at him appreciatively. ]
Oi, you're lookin' nice tonight! You really get all dressed up for me?
[ Between the two packages, Renji didn't have a hand free to tug self-consciously at his collar. So he merely ducked his head as he entered into Keigo's apartment. All the embarrassment in the world was worth it just to put that goofy looking grin on Keigo's face, though. ]
[ he offered renji a lopsided grin, recognizing almost instantly how sheepish he'd become in a matter of moments. he hadn't missed those gifts he was carrying, either, but the real present was seeing renji like this. ]
[ A brisk correction. Although Renji didn't care for most people's, if he's being even more accurate. But never mind that.
Renji dropped his offerings on the living room table, the small box first and then the longer, cloth-wrapped gift which made a slight clatter as it was laid down. He started on the box first, tugging at the ribbon wrapped around it. Then he stopped for a second and looked at Keigo. ]
You better get a fork.
[ He'd ask Keigo if he was hungry but.... he'd spent enough time with him by now to know that he was always up for a midnight snack. ]
[ keigo offered up a laugh and a shake of his head; such a silly thing... though keigo would always make sure to remind renji that he cared about his birthday...
at any rate, he watched renji set the gifts down, then looked a bit perplexed for all of two seconds before he hurriedly ran into the kitchen. ]
[ Ah... what a youthful reaction. Renji gave a short grin at Keigo's retreating back before finishing the unwrapping. ]
Why don'tcha try it and find out?
[ Although it was pretty obvious just looking at it and smelling it, judging by the delicate swirl of chocolate decorating the top of the cake and the aroma of coffee cream frosting. ]
[ keigo had grabbed a fork with little hesitation and was back to the table in moments. he looked so excited for something as simple as a cake... ridiculous.
but when he got a whiff of it and then actually saw it, his eyes may as well have turned to stars by how ecstatic he became. ]
UWOH!! This looks really fancy!! It looks so good!!
[ Renji watched Keigo comfortably from his seat on the chair, arms folded over his chest, trying to not look too happy about Keigo's expression of utter delight and failing miserably. ]
Doesn't it?
[ There's obvious pride in his agreement. Cause it is a hella #aesthetic little dessert. Renji figured he'd start this birthday strong out the gate and the cake, at least, he was confident in. ]
[ keigo looked positively beside himself with glee as he sat down, fork in hand, ready to dig into the cake. but before he did, he had to flash renji a grin, eyes bright. ]
I bet it's great! Thank you, Renji!
[ of course once he spat that out, he was unable to hesitate any longer with the dessert. it looked so good, though... he almost didn't want to ruin it. but that worry quickly dissolved the longer he stared at it, and keigo eagerly dipped the fork down, skewering a decent chunk of it. he unceremoniously lifted it to his mouth, humming happily as he chewed.
[ Renji waved away the thanks with a dismissive hand and a murmured, "Don't mention it." A cake was the very least he could do as a way to show his appreciation that Keigo was in his life. And anyway, just watching Keigo eat was enough thanks for him. He felt full just seeing him scarf down that hunk of cake all in one go. His head tilted, grin widening as Keigo made his very appreciative noises. ]
Glad you like it.
[ And he was glad Keigo could like it in such an adorable way. It inspired an impulse to tease him, just a little. Renji lifted a hand to Keigo's enraptured face and his thumb brushed at an errant bit of frosting smearing Keigo's lip. He brought his hand back and licked at his finger tip. ]
[ keigo was usually rather conscientious of his appearance, not wanting to tarnish his image by appearing unappealing. but foods like these... it was difficult to be anything other than gluttonous. he hadn't even noticed renji's attempt to tease him until it was too late, to which his eyes went a bit wide as he watched the short display renji made. ]
O-oi...!
[ keigo's face quickly turned red as he swallowed back whatever was left in his mouth. that was some kind of power move that he'd never seen renji perform before! it was almost scary, if it hadn't been so appealing to witness. ]
W-why don't you try some, then?
[ kind of a weak response... but what else could he say? ]
[ Ah... how cute. Renji leaned his chin in his hand as he watched Keigo's cheeks flush, looking entirely too pleased with himself. It was rare for him to be on this side of their mutual flustering, or at least it wasn't often that he managed it deliberately. Then again, he didn't have as many moves in his arsenal as Keigo did, and even less incentive to deploy them. At least all that sitting through sappy dramas (and being engrossed by every single minute of them) had proven to be instructive on top of entertaining. ]
Sure.
[ Renji held out a hand to take Keigo's fork and try this cake. It couldn't possibly be as sweet as the way Keigo looked when he took that first bite, but he wasn't about to turn it down just for that. ]
[ reaching out late is out of his hands, but when he is finally freed from his dimensional prison, he hesitates even then. would Keigo want to hear from him?
maybe not, but he had acted anyway, knowing that it might leave threads of guilt. he owes it to Keigo to at least try to pull away those very threads when guilt on his behalf is unwarranted. he would be fine. an action that would have ended with their positions reversed could never have been right. ]
